INVOLVING OUR PARENTS IN READING

At Hylands Primary we feel it is an essential part of our job to engage and support parents to enable access to a full range of reading experiences with their children. Our home-school relationships promote the importance of all adults in fostering a love of reading.

MYSTERY READERS

Image result for mystery reader Over the past year we have introduced Mystery Readers to Early Years and Key Stage One classrooms. Parents volunteer to share a story with their child's class but this information is kept secret until the parent appears at the classroom door! The surprise and excitement on the children's faces are wonderful to see. Some staff members have also joined in with the surprise!

Bedtime Book Boxes

The bedtime book boxes that we introduced to our Early Years and KS1 children were a great success last year. A child is chosen in each class each week to take the box home which includes a book chosen by the class teacher specially for that child to share with a family member over the weekend. We include a soft toy, a review book and a cheeky, sweet treat to make shared story time special.

books fairs

We regularly hold book fairs at Hylands Primary throughout the school year in order to promote reading for pleasure. Parents will be informed when a scholastic book fair will be visiting the school. Each class gets the opportunity to browse the wide selection of books and parents are able to purchase books at the end of the school day or through the ordering section of the scholastic website.

Every book purchased in one of our book fairs earns essential credit for the school to purchase books to use in the classroom!

Reading Coffee Mornings

At the beginning of the school year we organise reading coffee mornings for parents and relatives of our Key Stage One children. The purpose of these short sessions is to promote reading for pleasure opportunities as well as providing parents with a wide range of resources and activities to continue supporting their children at home. Parents and children get the opportunity to browse our school library together, attend shared story sessions, complete online reading activities on our chrome books and visit our book tasting reading cafe. For parents of our Early Years children, we run a phonics workshop which offers guidance to parents in supporting their children in their early reading development. Parents join their children to complete practical phonics activities that they can replicate at home.
