Hylands Primary School

Computing, in general, is a significant part of everyone’s daily life and children should be at the forefront of new technology, with a thirst for learning what is out there. At Hylands we believe computer science is at the core of the computing curriculum and we ensure we develop the children’s  ‘computational thinking’ which will enable them to participate effectively and safely in this digital world.

At Hylands we have high-quality computing education which equips pupils to use creativity to understand and change the world. At Hylands the main areas of computing are Computer Science in which pupils are introduced to a wide range of technology (including laptops, chrome books, iPads and interactive whiteboards, allowing them to continually practice and improve the skills they learn), Information Technology where the children are using computer systems to store, retrieve and send information and Digital Literacy where the children have the opportunity to evaluate digital content and use technology safely and respectfully. 

Hylands follow the National Curriculum requirements and ensures the children become digitally literate so that they are able to express themselves and develop their ideas through information and computer technology – at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world. The computing curriculum at Hylands promotes progression from Early Years until Year 6 enabling them to be computer literate. 

Throughout Hylands computing is promoted through specific computing lessons as well as cross-curricular sessions. Year 2 and Year 4 will have the opportunity to visit the Amazon Distribution Centre to experience the robotics of robo-stows and palletisers which use programming in order to work.

Hylands have had visitors from Danish educators to share and promote the range of equipment and knowledge of computing, visiting classes demonstrating Bee Bots, chrome books, ipads and laptops. 

At Hylands we take E-Safety extremely seriously - we ensure it is taught every half term and incorporated further into other areas of our curriculum.  It also links closely with our core value, ‘Respect’. 

We promote E-safety across the school and every year group will take part in E-Safety lessons based on ‘Switched On - E-Safety’. We further promote the importance of E-Safety by ensuring parents and staff are aware of our E-Safety policy and how to use the internet safely. Each year we have a designated day for E-Safety alongside our half termly lessons.

Digital leaders also take pride in promoting E-Safety and developing this understanding throughout the school.
